Hard to start: likely causes and what to do

The most common reasons, how urgent each one is, and when to stop driving.

SAFETY FIRST

Don’t try a jump start if the battery is cracked, leaking or smells like rotten eggs. Call for help.

What to do

  1. Notice when it happens (speed, braking, turning, cold or warm engine). It helps the mechanic.
  2. The most likely cause is weak or old battery: “Fix soon”.
  3. If anything feels unsafe, slow down, pull over somewhere safe and call for help.
  4. Check for open recalls with your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Recall repairs are free at the dealer.

General help, not a diagnosis. A mechanic can tell you for sure. Costs in the app are rough estimates.
