What to do

  1. Notice when it happens (speed, braking, turning, cold or warm engine). It helps the mechanic.
  2. The most likely cause is brake pads worn down to metal: “Stop driving”.
  3. If anything feels unsafe, slow down, pull over somewhere safe and call for help.
  4. Check for open recalls with your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Recall repairs are free at the dealer.

General help, not a diagnosis. A mechanic can tell you for sure. Costs in the app are rough estimates.
