Brake system light: what it means and what to do

Stop safely
SAFETY FIRST

Red brake light: if the brake pedal feels soft or sinks, don’t drive. Pull over safely and call for help.

What it means

The parking brake is on, or the brake fluid is low or there is a brake problem.

Is it safe to drive?

No. Pull over as soon as it is safe, turn the engine off and follow the steps below.

What to do

  1. Make sure the parking brake is fully off
  2. If it stays on, brakes may be weak: drive slowly to a shop or call for help

General help, not a diagnosis. Every car is a little different: your owner’s manual has the exact meaning of each light, and a mechanic can tell you for sure. Costs in the app are rough estimates. Check for open recalls with your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls (repairs for recalls are free at the dealer).
